Eclipse Turns 5!

The gurus at Gnu point out that the 'free' in 'free software' is used in the sense of 'free use' rather than 'free beer'. Turns out that they need to expand this meaning to include actual 'free beer' at selected points in the lifecycle of many Open Source products. One such event is rapidly approaching for our beloved Eclipse.

Web Tools at EclipseWorld 2006

EclipseWorld was recently held in Cambridge, MA, overlooking the Charles River down the road from MIT. The view of the Boston skyline was spectacular and the fresh river air provided a pleasant contrast to the exciting, but marginally breathable, Manhattan atmosphere of last year's event. Next year the event moves to Reston, Virginia.

Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) 1.5 Released

I'm pleased to announce that WTP 1.5 shipped on schedule on June 30 as part of the Eclipse 3.2 Callisto simultaneous release. WTP is part of this ten project mega-release, a first for the Eclipse Foundation, and a sign of things to come. As the Eclipse family of projects becomes more horizontally integrated it will be crucial to have all the parts developed on a coordinated schedule and released together.

Arthur Ryman's Eclipse Blog: Sun at EclipseCon 2006; The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Unlike last year's event, there was no keynote speaker from Sun. Nevertheless, Sun's presence was noticed last week at the Santa Clara Convention Center. I'd like to mention a few high and low points here.

Arthur Ryman's Eclipse Blog: WSDL 2.0 Implementation Progress - Apache Woden Milestone 3 Declared!

The Apache Woden project is a reference implementation of the W3C WSDL 2.0 specification which is now a Candidate Recommendation. The project is looking for help so here's a great opportunity for Java developers to contribute to the advancement of a major new Web Services standard. Here's the news annoucement.

Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) 1.0 Available for Download!

The bits for WTP 1.0 were baked last Friday and are cooling off now in preparation for their 'official' release on 2005-12-23. However, if you have a pair of oven mitts handy, feel free to download it now and munch this tasty snack over your Holiday break. Unless we discover some late-breaking show-stopper, the bits you'll get are actually RC5 which, as the name suggests, was our fifth attempt to produce a result that was worthy of vendor adoption.

Eclipse WTP Usage Reaches a New High - 9000' (2743m)

This conference is without a doubt the most well-organized software gathering I've ever attended. The logistics are ably handled by Wayne and Peggy Kovsky and family. There is virtually zero marketting hype here - no sponsors or demo booths, just solid technical talks.

Eclipse: The Story of Web Tools Platform 0.7

The Eclipse Open Source Integrated Development Environment (IDE) (see http://eclipse.org) is rapidly gaining popularity among Java developers primarily because of its excellent Java Development Tools (JDT) and its highly extensible plug-in architecture. Extensibility is, in fact, one of the defining characteristics of Eclipse. As the Eclipse home page says, 'Eclipse is a kind of universal tool platform - an open extensible IDE for anything and nothing in particular.'

This talk gives an overview of the project and focuses on its Web services support.

Creating XML - Based Web Applications Using IBM VisualAge for Java

Since the mid-'90s we've seen the quality of Web programming paradigms mature at an astonishing rate: from static pages with animation, CGI-based programs, and JDBC connectivity to back-end relational databases and servlets processing requests on application servers. We commonly hear about Web pages being more interactive, likely using HTML forms, JavaScript, or Java applets.

The Pragmatics Of Java Debugging

Essential to the development of complex systems are tools that help the developer locate, analyze, and fix problems. Debuggers provide support for this by letting a developer inspect the internal state of a program at runtime, as well as suspend and resume execution statement by statement.
