Data-as-a-Service Pioneer Turns Profitable
It’s the company’s new disruptive cloud-based system for acquiring and managing database records

Jigsaw, the five-year-old data-as-a-service (DaaS) pioneer whose business has doubled for the fourth year in a row, says it’s been profitable the last two quarters despite the sour economy.

Between a revenue run rate of upwards of $20 million, the recent expansion of its partner and user base and its expansion into data-driven cloud services, it figures it’s safe in predicting profitability will be sustained.

CEO John Fowler says the company won’t be going back to the VC well again. It raised $18 million in three rounds from Austin Ventures, El Dorado Ventures and Norwest Venture Partners, the last check coming in three years ago.

Jigsaw has monetized a B2B database built on user-generated content and compares what it’s doing to the data industry to what did to the software industry.

It figures to put the list rental people out of business and relieve users from having to manage and update contact records.

Jigsaw currently has over 14 million business contacts in its database, each containing a contact name, title, company, address, e-mail address and phone number. It includes C-level and VP-level contacts, as well as key mid-level managers who make and influence purchase decisions.

It also has profiles on two million companies. The data is heavily weighed to the tech business but expanding.

The breadth, depth and accuracy of its database are generated by its global community of 900,000 members. Changes are checked and the database updated nightly.

It charges monthly per-seat fees just like the SaaS providers. Use runs $99 a head a month for a minimum of 100 seats. If you’re willing to share data, it cost $79 a head a month. Fowler says 40% of users opt to share.

The company is closing in on 1,000 Enterprise customers. In addition to direct sales to customers, Jigsaw has assembled a string of 30 licensing deals with partners like, D&B, Lexis Nexis, Marketo, and Basho since launching Jigsaw Data Fusion two or three months ago.

It’s the company’s new disruptive cloud-based system for acquiring and managing database records.
