VMware Announces Broad Customer Adoption of VMware View
Simplifying Desktop Management, Lowering Costs and Enriching User Experience

VMware has announced broad customer adoption of VMware View, a desktop virtualization solution. With more than 1 million seats estimated across 7,000 customers, VMware View is establishing itself as the standard of choice to centralize desktop management, lower costs and deliver rich, personalized user experiences. VMware View(TM) has been widely adopted across industries -- including financial services, healthcare, education, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications and the public sector. In addition, organizations are accelerating large scale deployments across broader use cases as they may realize strong total cost of ownership (TCO) savings of $600 or more per end user in less than six months.

"We have deployed 600 desktops and are planning to deploy about 6,000 in the next 18 months to meet the needs of our employees across our 700 branches," said Phil Sinquefield, deployment service manager at Woodforest National Bank. "VMware View provides us with a solution to support end user mobility within the branch while cost-effectively addressing complex compliance and security requirements to restrict data access based on user and device."

"VMware View has helped us improve the efficiency of desktop provisioning, management and support so we can best serve our employees," said Chris Renter, manager, IT architecture at TELUS. "VMware View centralizes our desktop management, enabling us to protect corporate assets while delivering effective personalized desktops to TELUS teams wherever they are working. Traditional solutions couldn't offer the same level of data protection and application performance while streamlining desktop management."

Customers have been turning to VMware View to improve user flexibility, centralize desktop management and lower overall costs. In "Quantifying the Business Benefits of VMware View," an IDC whitepaper sponsored by VMware, organizations deploying VMware View reduced the annual cost of PC ownership by 50 percent resulting in savings of $600 or more per end user. This savings resulted from significant reduction in IT staff support costs and reduced downtime. On average, customers realized a ROI of 367 percent with a payback period as short as 5.6 months.(1)

"VMware View provides customers with the reliability and flexibility that end-users require in today's highly competitive business environment, while at the same time simplifying desktop management and lowering costs," said Michael Rose, industry analyst, enterprise virtualization software for IDC. "Organizations are turning to VMware View for improved IT management efficiency, lower costs and improved functional capabilities for end-users."

"VMware View allows us to support the desktop devices that our students and staff require, while enabling us to easily and rapidly deliver and manage dynamic desktop environments," said Kevin Schwartz, director of Information Services at Eanes Independent School District. "Now we can support more users, extend the resources to them at home, and lower costs by reusing equipment. With VMware View, we were able to change the homepage for hundreds of computers before school started in just five minutes."

Device-Centric Computing to User-Centric Computing -- The Next Wave
Desktop users demand flexible access to their personalized desktops, applications and data across multiple devices from a variety of locations. However, enterprise IT is challenged to meet these diverse user requirements with the current device-centric computing model as they are faced with tighter budgets, growing compliance and security policies and fewer resources.

By moving from a device-centric to user-centric computing model with VMware View, IT can embrace diverse user requirements and still maintain strong security and compliance while lowering overall costs. User-centric computing frees users from devices by removing the ties between end-user and device, enabling a more flexible computing model while meeting the needs of end users and IT without compromise. End-users benefit from improved access, availability and flexibility while IT organizations are better positioned to meet these diverse end user needs while retaining control. With user-centric computing, IT organizations are able to provision and manage users, not devices, to deliver improved efficiencies in deployment and management of the user desktop environment.

"The first wave of virtual desktop adoption came from customers driven to address security and compliance requirements, followed by a second wave focused on TCO," said Jocelyn Goldfein, vice president and general manager of the desktop business unit for VMware. "The next wave of adoption is being driven by the shift from device- to user-centric computing -- where users have freedom of access to their applications and data from any device and location and IT can deliver desktops as a managed service. VMware View is leading the way to user-centric computing and we look forward to providing its benefits to our current and future customers."

Built on VMware's industry leading virtualization platform, VMware View allows customers to standardize on a common platform from the desktop through the datacenter to the cloud -- and even desktops managed in the cloud.

"SHI International Corporation sees a tremendous opportunity in delivering managed virtual desktops and has developed an offering that leverages VMware View to provide a complete virtual desktop environment for a fixed monthly fee," said Bill Santos, general manager, SHI Services. "This approach allows our customers to reduce their need for distributed computing capital and operational budget, while increasing reliability, security, and accessibility of that core computing environment. SHI selected VMware View as it is the only solution with the necessary mix of management, accessibility, and flexibility to deliver a managed virtual desktop solution to our customers."
