Survey Reveals 30% of App Deployments Fail
Much of the flaws in creating and updating apps come from human error

The pressure on enterprises to deploy applications as fast as possible has never been greater. The mobile revolution, the huge impact of cloud computing, and the BYOD trend have intensified the pressure, forcing large organizations to re-think and re-tool their approaches to app development. For many, the answer has been to embrace rapid app development.

A recent survey by XebiaLabs discovered that most organizations' delivery models are unsuitable and that application deployments fail up to 30% of the time.

Much of the flaws in creating and updating apps come from human error. Partially scripted and partially manual application deployment is a huge drain on resources. It requires key IT staff with specific knowledge, and it can involve complex processes and multiple scripts. Manual scripting is not just time-consuming and error-prone, it's also very expensive.

The overarching results reveal organizations regard their current application release processes as deficient. Many organizations are seeking to automate "the last mile" of their release process.

The survey also indicates organizations are looking to implement solutions that help them move away from expensive, error-prone "big bang" releases and towards a continuous delivery approach.

Key Application Release Automation Trends:

  • 75% of respondents give their deployment process a failing grade.
  • Deployments fail 10 to 30% of the time.
  • 57% of respondents feel there is room for improvement in their release process.
  • 48% say inconsistency across their environment and applications is their biggest challenge in the deployment process-followed by dependency on expert resources (40%) and processes that move too slowly (38%).
  • 29% list increased efficiency as the top benefit of deployment automation followed by release acceleration (23%) and error elimination (19%).

The survey analyzed application release automation trends among DevOps professionals and C-level executives in companies with more than 1,000 employees.

Continuous vs. Manual Application Deployment and Delivery
"Our survey indicates a clear need for automation in the application release process," says Coert Baart, XebiaLabs CEO. "We are also seeing a trend towards choosing ‘off-the-shelf' solutions rather than developing in-house. Given these market trends, many organizations are feeling some urgency and realizing there are real business benefits to automating their application deployment strategies."

An AutomatedF
As IDC and others predict greater adoption of PaaS solutions in 2013, the potential of automated app deployment comes into stark relief. An automated software factory offers reduced burden on staff and enables an accelerated evolution of the platform itself.

Competing on what IDC calls the "Third Platform" means embracing mobile devices, cloud services, social technologies, and Big Data. Automated application deployment for continuous delivery of new features and upgrades will be a real competitive advantage in this space.

Deployit: Conquering the App Deployment Blues?
XebiaLabs recently released a new version of its popular Deployit platform, which frees up more operations resources and further accelerates time-to-market delivery of products and services. 3.9 adds support for key middleware stacks, and automates the self-service creation of on-demand cloud environments with a single click.

Engineered for continuous delivery of .NET, Deployit includes native Microsoft Team Foundation Server integration as well as content packs for Windows, IIS, and BizTalk. For advanced users, there' s Plan Analyzer, which gives step-by-step visibility and control in the application release process. The analyzer also provides users a "dry run" of the actual deployment commands.

Available as an add-on is the Deployit Cloud Pack for EC2, vSphere and other clouds. The pack provides a self-service portal for developers, testers and QA teams to easily spin up and tear down the on-demand environments they need.

"The newest release of Deployit is a major step in achieving our vision of creating the premier enterprise continuous delivery platform on the market today," added Baart. "Using Deployit, our customers are realizing ROI within 3 months or less, accelerating delivery frequency from months to hours and deploying up to 8x faster."
