People, Process and Technology at @CloudExpo | @IoT2040 #IoT #Cloud #DevOps #Microservices
Cloud computing and all that it entails, entails people

People have re-entered the picture in discussions about cloud computing.

This was my primary takeaway from this year's Cloud Expo New York, an event for which I serve as Conference Chair.

Over three days, we hosted thousands of delegates attending sessions from more than 150 speakers, including two prominent women as keynoters, and a range of topics that covered not only enterprise cloud in general, but microservices and containers, Big Data and the IoT, WebRTC, software-defined most-anything, an emerging DevOps culture... and people.

People, Process, & Technology
People, process, and technology has become a mantra within the world of DevOps proponents and practitioners, and it can easily be applied to the whole of cloud computing and all that it entails. Our DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann led a panel discussion on the topic.

Meanwhile, I led a technical discussion on aspects of the IoT with a panelist who went so far as to say the nascent M2M (machine-to-machine) IoT sector-which promises to reform the entire global $11 trillion manufacturing sector-will not be successful without the idea of M2M2H, the H standing for "humans."

IBM Cloud Ecosystem General Manager Sandy Carter focused on the human dimension entirely during her keynote about "chicks are chic," urging everyone to act as if they were "open APIs." She urged delegates to learn new programming languages, learn other new skills, and never fail to use their own human intelligence to solve problem, interpret results, and add value to their organizations and to the world.

Her keynote was followed on Day 2 by Cisco VP Manjula Talreja, who spoke of the Internet of Everything...that "everything" including the people who will drive it and benefit from it. Day 3 saw a keynote from Virtustream CEO Rodney Rogers, whose company had just been acquired by EMC for $1.2 billion. Rodney spoke a bit about the technology and positioning the company took, but also the management team and employees-the people-who made it happen and the customers (people) who drove the company's success.

People on TV
During each Cloud Expo, I sit down with a few dozen people individually for brief SYS-CON.TV interviews, during which I get a good sense of each event's focus and vibe. For most of the past 10 years, the vibe has been a tech vibe-web services one year, SOA the next, then RIA and AJAX, then virtualization, then cloud computing, then NoSQL, Big Data and the IoT.

This year, the emergence of a DevOps culture throughout enterprises and the effort it takes to get people to understand, accept, and ultimately thrive within it was the major topic of discussion.

Ultimately, the continued growth of Cloud Computing and everything it entails means people are more important than ever. So if someone asks you what the latest technology trend is, your reply can be very simple-it's "people."
