MarketResearch.com's report Back to School Shopping, by publisher Mintel, found that 2014 consumers expected to spend just under $75 billion total on back-to-school purchases, an overall increase from 2013. Hopefully, results from 2015 will show an even greater increase.

According to a survey released by International Council of Shopping Centers, 67% of consumers plan on spending more this year on back to school supplies than in 2014. Back to school is a time parents expect to spend, because supplies are an essential purchase. Back-to-school continues to be a necessary time to spend each year, with 29% said they will be spending to replace old clothes and supplies.
A separate survey from the National Retail Federation says overall total spending for school will drop 9% compared to last year. This decline is due to an anticipated 11% decrease in college spending, which accounts for two-thirds of back-to-school revenue.
