How a digital workplace in the cloud empowers people to achieve more

Building and Securing the Workplace of the Future

For any business to be successful, it must enable talent to focus on the innovation that will drive new value. As digital literacy and dexterity grows, people are increasingly agnostic about devices - they want to be able to access their personalized workspace and services anywhere, at any time, on any device that happens to be at hand.

The concept of digital transformation is gathering pace. When Gartner surveyed 388 CEOs recently, 56% said their digital improvements had already increased profits. But there's also significant pressure, with 47% reporting challenges from the board of directors to make more progress in digital business. Fujitsu's research surveying over 1,600 CXOs and business decision makers identified that 75% of the respondents felt that their business sector would fundamentally change within five years.

Embracing digital transformation is challenging and it requires a considered strategy. To leverage real value, it's important to focus on empowering people and fostering collaboration.

Putting the end user first
The landscape is evolving, and many people are demanding a virtual workspace that's available to them wherever they go.

"Work is no longer a place. Work is an activity," as former Citrix CEO Kirill Tatarinov recently put it at the Synergy event. Ensuring that your workers have the data they need to do a good job is vital. They should also be free to pick and choose the latest and greatest technologies. In short - put the end user in the driving seat.

Attracting and retaining talent is inextricably linked to digital maturity. Skilled employees are always looking for new ways to add value. Innovation and creativity requires a certain amount of freedom to experiment. A virtual workspace can boost workforce productivity dramatically, ensuring people can always pick up where they left off on tasks and work with the services they need.

At the heart of this new workplace, we find the same foundation that Big Data analytics, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, are being built upon - the cloud. As people construct complex hybrid clouds, pulling together disparate sets of technologies, along with the services and data they need, we must maintain visibility, security and compliance.

Securing the cloud
As the initial rush of excitement about the scale of the opportunity that the cloud represents subsides, it's time to address fundamental concerns about security.

The hybrid cloud market is expected to grow from $33 billion last year to more than $90 billion by 2021, according to MarketsandMarkets. Millions of new devices are connecting to cloud services every year and, in too many cases, visibility is poor. The risks of shadow IT are tangible, and data breaches are potentially disastrous for enterprises. A lot of valuable data is still housed in legacy systems that must be maintained, but we need it to be available on modern devices.

On the one hand, we're absolutely right to be empowering workers to work anywhere, but, on the other, we must provide secure tunnels, remain vigilant for unusual activity, and protect our valuable data. We can join together people with the apps and data they need safely and build a truly integrated digital workspace by using something like Citrix Workspace.

IT departments must have visibility and control to keep everything safe without applying lots of restrictions about the services people use. Smarter traffic monitoring and behavioral analytics add a whole new dimension to real-time defenses. A secure cloud is a solid foundation that allows your workers to focus on the task at hand without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure.

Collaboration is the cornerstone
Ultimately, this is human-centric innovation, enabling the use of advanced technology to empower people to innovate. We want to bring people, data, and applications together securely. The cloud is enabling collaboration on a much grander scale than has ever been possible. We can share ideas in real-time, view our businesses holistically, and gain new insights and fresh perspectives by analyzing unprecedented volumes of data.

Talented employees are seizing responsibility for creating value in their enterprises. If they can hone in on the services and technologies that will take your business to new heights, then you need to make sure they are supported with a solid framework that mitigates the risks. Build and secure that digital workplace of tomorrow and you will reap the rewards.
